Hunger Awareness Program (for students in grades K-4)
The historical setting during the Great Depression in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, along with anti-hunger resources, will be used to illustrate how this extreme economic downturn led to unemployment, poverty and hunger. Hunger awareness reading materials, activities and games will be used to engage, empower and educate children about the interrelationship between hunger, poverty and food security. Information about hunger awareness in conjunction with the Big Read novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, will be presented in an effort to educate youth about the causes and consequences of hunger. Anti-poverty and anti-hunger materials and games will be used to demonstrate the challenges faced by low income people trying to obtain nutritious food.
